America at 250

As the United States celebrates its 250th birthday, Areyvut is proud to release our newest educational resource, America at 250: 250 Conversation Starters, Reflections and Actions.

This timely publication was created to help individuals, families, schools, camps, synagogues, JCCs and communal organizations commemorate America’s semiquincentennial through meaningful conversations rooted in timeless Jewish values. Rather than focusing primarily on historical facts and dates, the resource explores themes including gratitude, chesed, volunteerism, leadership, civic responsibility, tzedakah, tikkun olam, commUNITY building, honoring those who have served our country and our shared responsibility to help build a brighter future.

The resource includes:

  • 250 thought-provoking conversation starters
  • Reflection prompts
  • Action ideas
  • Jewish texts and sources
  • Practical ideas for use at home, in schools, camps, synagogues, JCCs, board meetings and community programs

While developed in honor of America’s 250th birthday, the conversations, reflections and actions contained in this resource are designed to inspire meaningful dialogue and positive action throughout the year and for years to come.

This resource is lovingly dedicated to the memory of Sergeant Melvin Herbert “Buddy” Friedman (Menachem Chayim ben Avraham), who proudly served with the 116th Infantry Regiment, 29th Infantry Division during World War II. Mortally wounded during the D-Day landings, he succumbed to his injuries one month later at the age of 26. Sergeant Friedman was posthumously awarded the Bronze Star Medal and the Purple Heart for his courageous service and is buried at the Normandy American Cemetery and Memorial in Colleville-sur-Mer, France. His life and sacrifice remind us that freedom is never free and that citizenship carries with it both extraordinary privileges and profound responsibilities.

Whether used around the Shabbat table, in the classroom, at camp, during a board meeting, at a commUNITY program or simply in conversation with family and friends, we hope this resource strengthens relationships, deepens appreciation for our freedoms, inspires kindness and service and motivates people of all ages to make a positive difference in the world around them.
