Description of Organization:
HOSTS for HOSPITALS (HfH) is a nonprofit agency providing free lodging and support at volunteer-host homes as a caring response to the housing needs of patients and their families who come to the Greater Philadelphia area for specialized medical care. For the first eighteen years of operation through October 2017, over 500 host-families have now been provided 3,000-plus patient-families a combined total of almost 130,00 nights of lodging, thus saving these guests an estimated $8.75 million in equivalent hotel expenses.
Bnai Mitzvah Projects or Volunteer Opportunities offered by the organization for children ages 11 - 13:
Our largest need is to recruit families living within the Greater Philadelphia area to become hosts. A Bnai Mitzvah student living within this area could easily help by using the synagogue directory to call synagogue families asking them to become hosts. The goal would be to recruit just one new host family; this would make an incredible difference in the lives of patient-families, for if a new host lodged just three patient-families a year and did so for five years, the Bnai Mitzvah student would be responsible for 15 patient-families receiving lodging! Mike is also a Jewish educator, and thus would be happy to discuss with the Bnai Mitzvah various mitzvot which underlie the HfH program. He would also offer guidance regarding the making of the phone calls.
