In honor of Rosh Chodesh Adar and in conjunction with a schoolwide Yom Iyun focused on simcha and happiness, Areyvut is pleased to facilitate a Mitzvah Clown training for students at North Shore Hebrew Academy High School.
Rooted in the mitzvot of Bikkur Cholim, Kavod HaBriyot and Tikkun Olam, Mitzvah Clowning is not a performance, but a meaningful visit designed to change the energy of a room through joy, color and genuine human connection.
Students learn that the goal is not to entertain, but to uplift — to bring presence, dignity and warmth to seniors and other vulnerable populations.
During the training, participants explore the core values of respect, active listening, teamwork and inclusion.
Through guided role-playing of real-life scenarios, students practice responding thoughtfully to different personalities, working together using a “Yes, and…” approach and ensuring that each interaction prioritizes safety, modesty and comfort. They also learn practical tools of the trade — including how to use balloons, stickers and bubbles as conversation starters — always remembering to ask permission and be mindful of allergies or sensitivities.
Immediately following the training, students will visit residents at The Bristal to put their learning into action. The site visit reinforces that Mitzvah Clowning is about quality over quantity and about meaningful engagement rather than simply distributing balloons.
Visiting in teams, observing the tone of each room and including staff and family members when appropriate, students experience firsthand how small acts of joy can have a powerful impact.
After the visit, participants will debrief and reflect on what worked, what surprised them and how it felt to bring simcha to others.
This reflection highlights a central message of Adar: that true happiness often comes from uplifting others and strengthening commUNITY.
