Here is a great list of reasons from Stacy Donovan Zapar for why recent graduates and job seekers should take their free time and spend it volunteering. I would add, however, that there is value in everyone volunteering, not just for those who have a lot of time on their hands. We can all make a difference and add meaning to our lives.
