Areyvut’s “A Kindness a Day”

Areyvut around Town
 Areyvut coordinated a Bnai Mitzvah Fair for 5th grade girls and 6th grade boys on May 14th at Yeshivat Noam in Paramus, NJ. With guidance from their teachers, the students were encouraged to learn about each organization and begin thinking about ways in which to incorporate chesed into their bar or bat mitzvah celebration. As a follow up to this program, Michal Greenbaum, Areyvut’s Programming Coordinator, will be having individual bnai mitzvah consultations with interested students and parents.

Areyvut Out on the Island
 On the evening of May 20th at the Hebrew Academy of Nassau County (HANC) K-6th grade students and their parents participated in a school-wide Chesed Fair coordinated by Areyvut. There were ten stations each with a different chesed activity for everyone to get involved! Children and parents took the time to write letters to American soldiers serving in Iraq, make and decorate tzedakah boxes and create tissue paper flowers for those who are ill to name a few.
Thank you to Stefanie Greenberg from the Metropolitan Council on Jewish Poverty and Alex and Jason Selesny who helped students with various projects that evening.

TPI Spreads the Wealth
 It was an evening of good food, good friends and meaningful gifts on May 18th at the First Annual Teen Philanthropy Institute (TPI) Banquet. Throughout the evening students spoke of their TPI experience and the effect it has had on  them. In total, the 24 students in TPI allocated $11,000 to six organizations in the Bergen County area.

Spotlight: Bnai Mitzvah Project
DANIEL DIETZ
Daniel Dietz at The Smile Train
New York, NY
Daniel Dietz from Florence, MA was the 2007 Areyvut and JVibe Bnai Mitzvah Essay Contest Winner! After learning about children suffering with cleft lip and palate, Daniel decided to take it upon himself to change their lives. He came upon The Smile Train, an organization providing low cost reconstructive surgery for children. Daniel initially set out with the goal of raising $4,500 to impact the lives of 18 children. His plan was simple – to entertain people with his yoyo tricks and encourage them to donate any money they could in his “tip jar” after his performance. Before he knew it, Daniel had raised over $15,000!
Though Daniel’s bar mitzvah took place in 2006, he continues to perform throughout the U.S. with the proceeds being donated to The Smile Train.
