Reaching Jewish Men Through Ultimate Frisbee

Posted on September 1, 2011

I just read an amazing article / op-ed titled, “Ultimate Frisbee and the Next Generation of Jewish Men.”  In the article, Daniel S. Brenner writes about the post-Bar Mitzvah drop off rate and how it is particularly high for boys / men.  The article explores ways to reach out to teens especially in a society where boys are given mixed messages of whether he should be “loyal or defiant…sensitive or tough” etc.  Using play, such as ultimate frisbee , to reach teenagers as well as “criticial thinking and storytelling to engage teen boys in the question of what it means to be a mensch,” the boys learn that Judaism is relevant, which they my find happily surprising.
