Teen Philanthropy Institute

Areyvut, in collaboration with the Kaplen JCC on the Palisades inaugurated the Teen Philanthropy Institute (TPI) in 2008.  During its first year, there were 24 participants in the 8th-10th grades.  These participants learned how to serve on a grant-making board and become strategic philanthropists.  Each student donated $250 which was then matched by a donor for a total of $10,000 in allocation money.  An additional $1,000 was donated to the group to ensure that each of the six organizations that had representatives meet with group were able to receive funding.

The group had an opportunity to learn about each organization's mission, target population and structure.  Representatives from each organization were asked to write a Request for Proposal (RFP) indicating how they would use the funding.

In its second year, there were two cohorts of teenagers involved in the program.  Returning participants focused their efforts on learning about the needs of organizations based in Israel.  This cohort allocated $8,000 to two Israel based organizations.  New participants learned about organizations in need in their community of Bergen County.  They allocated $10,000 to four organizations.

Areyvut would like to congratulate the following organizations on receiving allocations from TPI 2009.  We wish them all continued success and thank them for the important work that they do.
